Lena and Joost opened Secret Garden Bakery on Kettingstraat in 2017, after years of running a sourdough stall at the Haagse Markt. They wanted somewhere that felt like a borrowed kitchen — unhurried, warm, and always smelling of crust.
The pub side came naturally. Den Haag's old working streets needed a place to sit after the market closed, somewhere between a bakery and a brown café. So they knocked through the back wall, added six taps, and kept the flour on the counter.
Everything is made in-house: the levain started the week they opened and has never been thrown away. The menu changes with what arrives on Tuesday mornings from the Westland growers. Come for the bread, stay for the second pint.
